Hi everyone! I've been watching many reviews and reading multiple threads but I still can't make up my mind on wether getting the Airpods Max, the Sony WH-1000XM4 (the XM5 version is not an option in my country, unfortunately) or the Bose QC45.

I specifically want them for long flights (12 hours) and the thing I really care about is noise cancellation. Audio quality is important but I'm not super picky so I'm sure I'd be fine with either of them, I currently use Airpods 2nd generation and they're more than enough for me, so you can get an idea.

I'm quite claustrophobic and sensible to noises so, naturally, flights are kind of a nightmare to me. Noise makes everything much worse so that's why NAC is super important. I know Airpods Max are twice the price but I'd be open to spend that money if they're significantly better for enginee plane noice. Are they? Have anyone used both? Do any of them 100% cancel this type of noise?

Also, do this kind of headphones still have noise cancelation when connected directly to the plane entretainment? Or do they need to be connected by bluetooth?

Thank you very much!

Can’t comment on airplane engine noise, but I tried the AP Max on my Toro Zero Turn riding mower and they darn near subdue all engine sound. I have the latest Sony NR headset and it does not do as well on killing the noise.

The AirPods Max do a great job at suppressing airplane and train noise. I can't really compare them to anything other than the AirPods Pro (which, while OK, don't have the mass to block out as much). I've not used the Bose or Sony headphones.

I’ve found for long term listening, the Sony XM series tend to feel better and more comfortable. The AirPods Max for me are too heavy after a while.
