Do I need my phone out to use AirPods as a hearing aid or am I missing something obvious?

As far as I know you can't manually activate AirPods to operate alone without them being connected via Bluetooth to another device. You'll need to have it connected to a nearby iPhone/iPad/Mac or other device, even if you're not listening to anything from that device in order to use them.
