I was talking to a friend today who recently bought some non-Pro AirPods.
I had a bunch of the wired ear buds and just couldn’t get a fit. He says the AirPods fit him well, but claims he also could not use the wired  ear buds. Did  tweak the shape to make the Regular AirPods fit a wider range of users? I just figured  finally woke up and made the Pros so they could fit anybody like they should have back in the beginning. AirPods (G1 and G2), not Pro, have wider, longer and heavier stems, the heads themselves are very similar to EarPods shipped with iPhones. This extra weight of the stems also helps keep them in the ears better than the wired ones, which are lighter.
