I got my AirPods 2 (with Charging Case) the other day. Yesterday I ran out of juice (totally drained) after about 2.5 hours of listening (but while not listening they were on the counter, not in charging case). I was surprised, so I started monitoring the battery.

When I'm using them the drain seems normal. When not in use I put them on the counter and not in the case.

Just sitting on the counter I'm watching the battery drain (by reading the iPhone Battery Widget):
97% at 6:19am
96% at 6:23am
94% at 6:43am
90% at 7:12am
88% at 7:23am

What do you think?

P.S. No, they're not still connected, I see no bluetooth symbol on the iPhone. Using the latest iOS 12.2

Edit 1: Now I'm noticing that if I go into the Bluetooth settings I see that they're connected. But for that matter, so is my Apple Watch, and my watch doesn't drain fast. So I don't know if staying connected is normal. I plugged in wired headphones and played something just to see if the connection state would change and it did not.

Edit 2: Edited first paragraph for clarification.

I just talked to AppleCare about my new AirPods, which they concluded are defective. One of the symptoms was battery draining when not in use. Call AppleCare and give them your AirPods serial number. They can determine if they're in what appears to be a batch of defective devices. They said that mine were in a group marked for capture, which means they want to get them back and replace them with new ones.

AirPods do indeed drain fast when they are "stored" outside the case.

Why? I have no idea. My BeatsX also die quite fast if I don't turn them off when I don't use them. Perhaps something linked to the W1 chip?
