Airpods 2 less flakey but still flakey with Macbook Pro

One annoyance I always had with the original Airpods using them with my Macbook Pro was intermittent connection issues. Occasionally when I closed the lid of my Macbook to run to another room, let's say make lunch...and I left the pods in...I would hear the pods make the "bonk" connect noise several times, then when I opened the lid of my Macbook the bluetooth icon would show that the Airpods were connected but nothing would play. Turning off bluetooth and turning back on sometimes worked, but usually I would have to reboot the Macbook, which was quite annoying. So I always tried my darndest to take the pods off and put them back in their case when I was leaving the Macbook for more than a minute or two.

With the V2 Pods (or the new software) things seemed to get better. Usually I can wander off with the pods in, then open the lid and get right back to listening to music, but not always. Sometimes I still have to re-connect with the pods or turn bluetooth off then back on. Occasionally I still have to reboot. This happened to me again today. Wandered off with the pods in. Heard the "bonk" every few minutes. Came back to the Macbook. Bluetooth icon showed connected. Nope, no audio. Connected to the pods with my iPhone and it still showed connected on my Mac. Finally had to reboot. I'm happy that things have gotten better but I'm quite disappointed that this still happens occasionally.

You may want to contact AppleCare. I just received the new AirPods and had several connectivity issues. Apple determined that my serial number indicates the AirPods are part of a group that were defective, and they're replacing them.

Thanks, I'll check into that. It happened again today where I had to reboot my Macbook Pro to get it to recognize the new Airpods. Very frustrating.

I'd leave the lid open... I wonder if the lid affects antenna....


I think it's weird that on the Mac, Airpods is both in the bluetooth icon and the sound icon in the menu bar. I can "connect" in the bluetooth app but that doesn't mean it's usable, I still have to connect in the sound app. But usually I just connect in the sound app.

Just happened to me again... Left my 2018 Macbook Pro (10.14.4) up and running while I stepped away and eventually out of range of the Mac. Heard the disconnect noise in the Airpods. Came back and saw the bluetooth icon showed connected but it wasn't. Wouldn't let me reconnect, not even turning BT off and back on would work. A work-around that I discovered is connecting to another BT device, THEN I can reconnect to the Airpods.

Has been for us like that in the family with 5 different AirPods and 4 different computers.

The AirPods 2 work extremely well with my iPhone and as well the iPad.
But they are intermittent on our iMac Pro. Especially if I have keyboard, mouse and trackpad connected via Bluetooth.

I gave up using them on the Mac for extended time.
