I currently own a pair of 2nd gen AirPods and love using them (mainly for music and the odd telephone call). However, I do not use them for running outdoors as I think they will stop working properly when sweat gets into them! Therefore do I ‘upgrade’ and buy the Pros? The squeeze tip is annoying in comparison to the tapping of the 2nd gen, but you can get round this by using your Apple Watch and Siri function to play next track, pause etc.

I prefer the Apple in ear AirPod over the Power Beat design Although I’ve never used the latter.

Any help/advice would be most welcome ?

I use AP with foam covers for long hiking/running and have not had an issue. The open design lets me hear cars/trucks, etc. I wouldn't use a sealed earbud for running even with transparency mode.

Where did you buy the foam covers from?

I use my Gen 1 AP for running. Sometimes they move in my ear and I have issues re-adjusting, but for the most part, they work great for running/exercising.

Are you not worried about sweat getting in and ruining them? They are not sweat resistant nor are the second gen.

I was at first, but after the 1st run I was no longer concerned. I've been running with them for the past couple of years, a few times a week. I wipe them down before i put them back into the case and have not noticed any degradation of sound.

However, YMMV.

I have used my first gen AirPods for running a number of times, and they work fine. The sweat is no issue. But my AirPods Pro, which I got several years after the original AirPods, are way better. The sound is way better, and they stay in my ears better also (though the AirPods are Ok with that too). And I have no problems letting sound in when transparency mode is on.

I've been contemplating upgrading my Gen 1 for APP but after jumping into that rattlegate thread, it def has made me a bit hesitant in upgrading. Have you had any issues with your set?

Helpful to know. I ran with my 2nd gen earlier this summer for a while and they started playing up with connectivity/one airpod wouldn’t connect to my iPhone so I had to send them back to J Lewis. I expect it was caused by sweat. I’m onto my second pair of airpods (2nd gen) and needless to say I haven’t used them again for running. I feel I learnt a lesson there.

I used to run with AirPods for awhile. They fit very nicely in my ears. However, I sweat a LOT during any exercise so I have to wipe and clean after the run, otherwise it can get oily and sticky. Also it's not exactly sweat resistant so you'd have to be more careful.

Then I tried the AirPods Pro and I'm actually not a fan of it. It hurts my ears after a run and it's harder to clean than the regular AirPods. Furthermore, if you do some weightlifting at the gym, for some reason the AirPods Pro tend to slip out of position in my ear because of the funny faces I make ?

I eventually returned the AirPods Pro and went with the Powerbeats Pro for runs and gym, and I never look back. I still keep the regular AirPods for casual uses like listening to podcasts and music.

I am looking to upgrade from my Gen 1 AP and considering the Powerbeat Pros. Do they hurt your ears after a gym/run session?

I have both, can't run with either. You should get PowerBeats wireless (for same functionality), or any buds geared to sports. PowerBeats will give you a much better time during running. Sweat did not form an issue in either case however.

This made me very pleased to read. I had hoped spending £219 they would 1) fit well and 2) have better sound than my second gen. I like my second gen Airpods but don’t want to potentially ruin them again due to sweat.

I use my AirPods Pro for slow paced/stationary activities such as walking, jogging, treadmill, stationary bike and weightlifting. When it comes to faster paced activities such as HIIT, runs and outdoor bike rides, I use my Powerbeats Pro. I learned it the hard way that especially on bike rides, the wind resistance often times knocks out my AirPods Pro, but my Powerbeats Pro stay in perfectly fine (ear hooks help quite a bit.)
I have not had any sweat related issues dating back to the original pair of AirPods. AirPods Pro has been the same. Same thing goes for my Powerbeats Pro.
While I LOVE the transparency mode on my AirPods Pro, if you wanted to go with a more "versatile" option, I'd encourage you to buy the PowerBeats Pro. The custom fit of the Powerbeats Pro goes a long way especially if you see yourself changing the way you workout or adding different activities to your everyday routine.
Hope it helps!

i used the first genAP with little silicon attachments to keep them in from Amazon and they were no where near as great as the Pros. You put the pros on and they are staying in, so if you running a lot, get the pros, you won’t regret it.

Stick with the 2nd gens. A bit of sweat won't hurt them. My 1st gens went through the washing machine twice, and still performed like champs.

I don’t run but if I did ( might start soon) AirPod pros for sure. While for walking or etc the AirPods design is fine for me they do move slightly so I’ll be afraid for them coming out. But NGL I also have Powerbeats pro and love them. I would try them out and if you don’t like them you can always return them

This is really helpful, thanks. I mainly use mine for running 4-5miles around London outside. This morning it was raining rather hard when I ran, which meant I didn’t even take any earphones with me as don’t own ones which are waterproof and don’t want my current wired Apple earphones break! Far from ideal I know. I would like to take my second gen on runs but like you I learnt the hard way. My first pair (2nd gen) were not even one year old and after using them for running the connectivity played up and they didn’t work as well. I had to send them back through John Lewis to get a replacement. The replacement have never been used for running. A shame as the sound quality is great I think. The APP are sweat resistant as are the Powerbeats Pro, but the hook around the ear on the latter would cause discomfort IMO. Part of me wonders when Apple will supersede the APP and will they make them 100% waterproof. It rains a lot in London these days!

I wouldn’t say they hurt but you’d feel a little fatigue in your ears. AirPods Pro, on the other hand, actually hurt my ears after a prolonged use. It really pushes into your ear and it just couldn’t sit well. I LOVED the noise cancelling and transparency modes though.

I suggest give them both a try if you can. See which one you like more and return the one you like the least at any Apple Store ?

Yes the noise cancellation for London traffic seems a winner for me! The noise is loud when running outside. Can you try both and return them? I was under the impression you cannot due to health and hygienic reasons?

Also I guess the APP go further into your ear in comparison to second gen Airpods? The latter I find very comfortable.
