Airpods 2 range

For whoever is interested...I was hoping with Bluetooth 5 support the range would be better with the new Airpods. There are many times that I'm listening to Spotify on my 2018 MacBook Pro while walking to a different room or outside so this is important to me as often times the audio cuts out when I get too far away. I took my MacBook outside and tried to see how far I could walk with both the Gen 1 and the Gen 2 Airpods and found absolutely no difference. Kind of a disappointment.

Sound quality sounds the same to me. With the improvements in the new firmware for Gen 1 AirPods, really the only difference seems to be the wireless case and better Siri support.

My gen 1 work AMAZINGLY well, hopefully that wasn't a fluke. I can have them on in a starbucks, and go all the way to the bathroom and around even outside and still have them work. Same for at home, other than if my device is in the kitchen (too much shielding) I can walk around a 2500 sq house and use them easily. Hopefully, that will still be the case

Thanks for the feedback. I was concerned about this too.

I watch YouTubeTV on my macbook and with my gen 1 airpods, the audio would cut out when I'm about 30 feet away. It gets annoying especially when I'm in the kitchen cooking and want to hear my tv shows.

I was hoping with BT5.0, the range would be better.

It seems that it makes no difference whatsoever, disappointingly. EverythingApplePro on Youtube seemed to come to the same conclusion though he ran out of room while I didn't.
[doublepost=1553737683][/doublepost]I would be curious to compare to my 1st gen earlier firmware though it's now too late for that since it's now updated. In general both my 1st gen and 2nd gen seem to have better range than the 1st gen with earlier firmware. I'm wondering if that's not just a placebo effect.

BT is peer to peer and low power. So it will never have a long range. And range depends on what it’s traveling through and how bad the 2.4 spectrum is. So if your home and not passing through heavy objects it’s prob decent range. Now go to an area that saturated with 2.4 and it won’t have the same range.

BT5 is faster and more range in the spec, but it will suffer from the same issues that WiFi does.

Range can be effected so by so many things. in my house depending on where my phone sits by my computer I am pushing getting 30 feet. down in the concrete bunker of my basement shop at work with tons of rebar in the walls they go father then at home and father then my airport extreme does.
