That's only the wireless charging battery case, which does not include the actual AirPods. That's just to show compatibility with the Air power. As far as when the next version of the AirPods are going to be released, there is no specific timeline for this product, being it's too new. But I don't see the Airpods on an annual release. I don't believe we will see a version two of the AirPods in 2018.

Are we expecting the charging case to only be available separately?

I’m expecting the existing AirPods to be replaced with a version that provides the wireless case as standard.

The case alone may be available for those who already own AirPods.

They’ll probably release different color options this upcoming year, but we probably won’t see a true successor until maybe the year after. Bluetooth headsets are generally updated every 2 or 3 years.

We'll get the new charging case whenever AirPower is released. When that will be is anyone's guess, though I'd presume Spring 2018 or WWDC latest.

I understood the Airpods use Apple’s W1 chip, same chip as in earlier Apple Watch.

Given the new W2 chip for the AW3, I was indeed expecting revised AirPods (same design, upgraded internals) some time in 2018.

That could also serve an excuse to add color options (black please) or give it better battery life and/or range.

They aren't going to add color options. White headphones is the strongest form of Apple branding, they won't change this on their headphones.

Does the wireless case also have a lightning port?

We won't see a black pair that's for sure, people have been asking for black Apple headphones since the first iPod was released. Black headphones just don't stand out enough. That said I would love if they added the Ceramic Space Grey color. That fits Apple's style and definitely stands out. Just make it a shade lighter than the Watch and it would look great.

Rumours of new slimmer AirPods 2 started rolling in!

If I had to put money on it, I would say that the form factor will remain the same and the battery life in the AirPod's themselves will see a boost due to whatever new found space they can find to fit more battery. My reasoning is they are currently working on the wireless charging case they likely aren't going to manufacture two different cases.

Apple seem to have messed with branding here, as W1 was a Bluetooth chip in the headphones (AirPods and beats) and now suddenly the new W2 is a Wi-fi/Bluetooth chip in the Watch itself?

It’s not very consistent... do I want W chips in my watch/phone or in the headphones? Perhaps both?
