Hi

I am looking into buy my first pair of AirPods (2nd Generation). I understand there are two versions of these: with charging case and with wireless charging case.

I'm guessing the wireless charging case requires some sort of wireless charging mat? I don't have a wireless charging mat and have no plans to purchase one.

I'm looking for clarification on something, as I'm not entirely familiar with AirPods. Does the non-wireless charging case version charge the AirPods on the go, or is that reserved for the wireless charge case version only?

Many thanks in advance for any replies and advice.

Both cases keep the AirPods topped-up so long as the case has a charge with which to do so. The wireless charging case requires a QI pad in order to be charged wirelessly, but I believe it also has a lighting socket. If you don’t ever intend to buy a QI pad then the wireless case is a waste of money.

For clarity, both cases charge the AirPods wirelessly, but the standard case can itself only be charged by lighting.

The wireless case does have a lightning port and can be charged with a lighting cable or with a wireless charging pad.
Both the standard and wireless charging cases will charge the AirPods on the go until the case itself runs out of charge.

Going to +1 the suggestion to not waste the money on the wireless charging case version unless you plan on getting a Qi charger, and they're not really worth it currently. Zagg/Mophie has an Airpower-like mat on the horizon at least.

Many thanks for the replies and information. I'll save my money and go for the standard version.

Even if you have a wireless charger, they are still another $100AUD here on what you can get them for without the wireless charge case.
