I got Airpods 3 for my gf for one feature alone—the ability to detect where they are. She had lost her old Airpods 2, and so I upgraded her.

They don't work. They register in Find My, but largely uselessly. There's no U1 chip, so no actual tracking. If anything, it is MORE annoying than the old ones, which didn't pretend to be findable.

This has been such an issue that she's getting rid of them and rebuying the Airpods 2 again. I'm pretty disappointed in Apple for implementing half-assed tracking that is, in fact, largely useless.

If your girlfriend cannot appreciate the sound quality of the AP3 vs the AP2 she probably made the right decision.

I just think Apple was negligent—don’t claim Find My support if it’s effectively worthless in use!

She could tell they sound better—but the feature they were bought for was Find My.

I can’t do that, she doesn’t use sealed ear headphones.

The only correct response is that Apple shouldn’t make such a crappy product!

They work exactly as advertised.

They don’t. Without a U1 chip they are dreadful. I know—I had 1st Gen AirPods Pro, with similarly dismal performance.

If you mean ‘as advertised’ that they uselessly blear their location in alerts, but then when you actually need to locate them it doesn’t work then yes, they do.
