So much for apple’s claims that they created the most comfortable AirPods ever with the AirPods 4’s, I had high hopes for these but they cause the same sore just like the previous gen’s. I wear my AirPods for hours on end and the AirPods 2 are the best in terms of not causing discomfort. Do most of you basically just use your AirPods on your commutes or short periods of time? Comfort was the big focus from Apple on these new AirPods but as far as comfort and fit goes, the AP4’s are definitely not on par with the AirPods 2.

I find the fit of AirPods 4 very close to AirPods 2 that I loved. AirPods 3 were absolutely unusable and just dropped out of my ears. Happy with the compromise of improved audio quality and ANC with 90% as good of a fit. Feels like I’ve got nothing in my ears whereas with AirPods Pro 2 (that I had once I realized I couldn’t use AirPods 3) I was constantly aware of them.

There will always be some ears that either the 4s or the 2s won’t 100% fit. Apple sell millions of Airpods every year.

Have you done the ear tip fit test?

I found that I needed a smaller tip in my right ear than my left ear with my Airpods 2. I'm wearing mine as hearing aids for 8+ hours a day without problems an I had never worn anything like Airpods before. I find the silicon is very soft in my ear.

I can’t say much about the AirPods 4 because I’ve been using the AirPods 2nd generation, and honestly, I love them. I wear mine for 9 to 9.5 hours a day, and I’ve never had any discomfort or issues with my ears. From my experience, the AirPods 2 are really comfortable, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for earbuds they can wear for long periods without any trouble.

You really can’t blame Apple when you have had previous experiences with different models. My new 4s with ANC fit perform better than any AirPods I have owned. I also wear for hours at a time.

They just might not be for you.

This is more likely to be the 3 than the pro's, since the 3/4's have the mic/vent at exactly that location.

However your concha would have to be extremely deep for contact to constantly occur there, my guess is that instead, you're constantly jamming them forcefully into your ear due to the bad fit and that is causing friction due to the rough surface of the top mic/vent port.

Perhaps you should look at something like the Powerbeats Pro. It's not the latest and greatest Apple integration, but at least it has Apple integration.

I'm not jamming them in to my ears at all. I tried all variations of placement in the ear including having them somehow loose sitting in the ear lightly and the same painful sore occours and it has to do with the shape of the AirPods 3, Airpods 4 and Airpods Pros (1st and 2nd gen). It does NOT occour with the Airpods 2.

You obviously have ears that are shaped in a less common fashion than the majority. Try another form factor or brand.

Down south
I just got pro 2s to give another try because I have a super difficult time getting a comfortable fit. They don’t hurt my ears per se, but if they fit too tightly, they cause me to have headaches.

I was afraid to even try the 4s, and with the pro 2s for such a good price at Amazon, I figured I’d give them a shot.

Unfortunately it may be your ear shape isn’t the common fashion that the AirPods are for when I first got my AirPods Pro 2 I was actually kind of worried cause at first I had the exact similar issue like you and I had very bad discomfort and I was worried the ear shape I have the AirPods simply aren’t made for me until I found out I was wearing them wrong and you had to do a slight twist like upwards aaaand yep… That little twist worked like magic they fit perfectly snug I don’t even notice I have them on honestly lol and don’t move at all no matter how much I move my head so yeah I think I would recommend you try this little “slight twist” trick and may do it for you or I don’t know man maybe you will have to try another brand.
