I feel like this gen of AirPods more than previous ones or the Pro's, sometimes music or a podcast continues playing even after I've put an AirPods down.

Seems to happen more often when I put down both of them at the same time, and have to re-orient and make obvious I laid down one for it to realize its been laid down and pause.

...usually if I just pop one out, I think 'it knows' the other one is laid down but can't be certain

Not the end of the world, but another one of those things I wish didn't happen.

Doesn't seem specific to one device or app either

They use a different more basic type of sensor to detect skin, so if they detect the presence of anything in front of the sensor it thinks you have them on your ears. The Pro's use a more advanced sensor that knows when it's skin or just your tablecloth.
