So I posted this on Apple "Discussion" forums but it seems that discussion doesn't cover anything but being positive about Apple and they took it down about as fast as it went up. Censorship by Apple... or maybe I just fell foul of their community guidelines?

Anyway, I have a problem with AirPods / Apple, but Apple won't listen. I have:
  1. MacBook Air on 13.2.1
  2. Google Pixel phone
  3. AirPods Pro 2
I am unable to register the AirPods on the Find My network. Frustratingly, Apple Support didn't know that this wasn't possible, and after 3 (long) calls, lots of troubleshooting and even a replacement set of AirPods, Apple finally realised before telling me that I should "use a friend's iPhone" to register the device on Find My. Fairly arrogant I think to assume that I have friends with iPhones, and that anyone would be happy to let me go through the faff of logging them out of their device to register my AirPods.

This is classic Apple in the post-iPhone era: money and market dominance no matter the cost. Disabling (in my view) Find My for AirPods on the Mac is at worst a deliberate and cynical attempt to get me (and others) to buy a new iPhone, and at best an arrogant assumption that nobody could need this feature because "everyone has an iPhone". Like many others, I love my mac, but don't don't want or need an iPhone. I have no intention of replacing my perfectly functional (and better than iPhone in my view) Pixel phone at significant cost, in order to register new AirPods on the FindMy network. Apple however are pushing me (and presumably many others) to do exactly this.

I know that there's no fix here, but Apple feedback process is pointless and my complaint has been ignored. Hoping that others searching for this issue will come across this thread, and maybe naively hoping that others who don't have this issue will agree with me and maybe even pick up enough interest to get Apple to pick this up and stop misbehaving?

Cheers all!

It's supposed to be possible to see AirPods on Find My if they were activated on a device with Find My already enabled, be it Mac , iPad or iPhone. Odd that you are finding otherwise.

With the last Update to 12.6.4 I got the solution for your problem: My registered AirPods Pro 2 don't show up anymore in my Macs Find My. Registering them might not change anything for you so you just can leave it be.

(Interestingly, my MacBook Pro now requests me to change the battery on my AirTag "AirPod Pro left" ... didn't know that was possible ..)

That was my understanding too, but Apple 2nd line support confirmed otherwise. Pretty stupid of them in my opinion!

Thanks. What's the solution you mentioned?

I too have Air Pods Pro 2 and cannot get them registered on Find MY. Called Apple and got an explanation that they should be there. The conversation was headed toward an episode of Seinfeld so I just dropped it. Pretty pathetic that there isn't a clear, simple, understandable process for getting one's new Air Pods recognized by Find My.

Indeed. It's also fairly unprofessional support given that only a select few at Apple support seem to know that this isn't possible. I've put in a "feature request" here but doubt anything will happen until Apple starts losing money... but let's see. I suppose the more people that put one in the more of a difference it will make... (wishful thinking?)

In an annoying twist, I met a friend the other day who kept getting notifications on her iPhone telling her that "unregistered AirPods are travelling with her". If it was a 'nice-to-have' before, now it's annoying iPhone users too!

I don't see any mechanism to make a complaint to Apple. Am I missing something or are they so arrogant as to assume nobody would ever need to complain? The only option that I can see is "feedback" which has the "we read everything but can't promise to respond" tag.
