Hi

Anyone know if you can connect AirPods to a Mac Pro late 2009 (originally a 4,1 but flashed to 5,1)? I'm running El Cap 10.11.6. There's no WiFi card onboard. It has the original Bluetooth card only.

I'm getting the impression that they will connect but it needs doing manually. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks.

It can work on the 5,1. My wife has that, and tired it on the Mac.

The pairing is very standard, no extra limitation. But I tested it some time ago, can't quite remember how the actual behaviour. From memory, once finish the initial pair up, it's pretty much automatic. However, my Mac has the wifi ac / BT4,1 card upgrade, all Handoff, continuity, watch unlock etc was activated by CAT. Not sure if this will make any difference.

Thanks for the reply. Great to know that they’ll connect.
Not fussed if I have to manually connect - as long as it connects.

Re-reading this - I think your upgraded BT module will be making a difference.

For your info, that AirPods can even work with the PSV (Sony PS Vita). So, I am quite confidence that can work with almost any Mac that has BT. Even though other functions may be disabled, and I don't know how "automatic" can it be (if without the BT4.0). But it should at least able to work like a normal BT earphone.

This is perfectly acceptable for desktop use. I’d handle all functionality other than the audio stream manually anyway.

I’m now looking at the other threads about BT dongles but I’ll come back to those if I can’t get the AirPods working.

I use AirPods and they just hand off. I have an upgraded WiFi/BLE card. But I can seamlessly hand off between all my Macs, iPhone and iPad Pro. All macs have upgraded cards.

Seems like most people have the upgraded Bluetooth cards, which I unfortunately don’t.
