Airpods auto pause when using only one airpod

my job requires me to be able to hear stuff around me so I mostly use only one AirPod at a time but the auto pause/play doesn't work when I only use one. Is this normal behaviour?

After putting the AirPod back in my ear I hear the little "bong" that means it's connected but I have to dig out my phone to start playing again.

I don't believe there is a way. After you hear the "bong" noise, just double tap the airpod to play from where you left off.
