I put off getting airpods until the iPhone X because I thought the new version with wireless charging would be released with the phone. Seemed like a safe bet. But it has been a while and still no news of the new airpods.

When do you think the new airpods will be released?

Given that new airpods have been announced (but with little details) by apple, are the old (current) airpods worth getting today?

AirPods are excellent. Take advantage of them if you find them in stock. Which right now they have been very limited. I don't see the AirPods on an annual release, especially given how popular they are at the moment. The only update coming with the AirPods is going to be the new wireless charging battery case that can be used in conjunction with the AirPower.

If you find them on sale, snap them up now. Try them for 2 weeks & weigh up whether they're good enough to hold onto.

Don't wait. I'm not a fan of Apple's EarPods because they don't stay in my ears well, but I got AirPods for Christmas and they are awesome! They sound great and they stay in my ear with no wires to weigh them down.

Buy now and enjoy. Seems like the next step will be a standalone wireless case, and then the next true AirPods update probably won't be until quite some time after that, so buy now and enjoy.

I still plan on buying version 2, when they inevitably add a long hold or slide up/down function for volume up/down. Until then, I love mine.

I’m thinking there coming sometime in 2018, that would give them a run time of a year and half 2 years.

Everyone needs to remember they came out December 2016. So we’ve already passed the year mark. Going in to Year 2 now

My wife purchased mine last night. Apple had about 6 in stock where they were out of stock over the weekend. While being able to charge wirelessly would be nice, I'm not that worried about it at this time.

The iPhone X/8/8 Plus support bluetooth 5 so there is a good chance the next version of the airpods will support that standard as well. It seems strange that Apple would update only the *case* of the airpods and not the headphones themselves.

I think in the next year we'll start seeing some more advanced options for truly wireless headphones from many manufacturers. Anecdotally, just 3 months ago at my gym most people still had wired headphones and now the clear majority have some version of wireless headphones. I've rarely seen a new piece of tech adopted so quickly.

Is the 5 hour battery life a deal breaker? And How is the sound ?
5 hour battery life is one of the deal makers imo.

But you get all day battery life with the case. It's continuous use too, as you can quick-charge one Airpod whilst using the other.

Battery life is good as others expressed. As for your other question....put it simply the high price point for an otherwise wireless version of what you get free with your IPhone is not because of the sound quality but for the convenience. They may have a slight edge in the sound department over the wired version, but nothing to write home about in my opinion. It all depends on what you want to use them for. If good sounding buds is your top priority, spend a little more and get something substantially better. If your heavily invested into the IOS ecosystem and want something easily paired with your devices there is not a better option.

I doubt these AirPods are gonna receive new significant design any time soon. I would say 4 years at least. The AirPods are awesome. Just flip the top, it connects. To disconnect, put them back in the case. You don’t have to think about turning it on and off. I usually use them for phone calls every day. Also gym and jogging. They just work which is something I can’t say for a lot of apple products these days.
