I love my AirPods and almost fully panicked when I could only find one AirPod yesterday. However, I carry two phones, and can never get the phones and AirPods to connect to each other when I want them to. What is the best sequence of events to get this to happen when I open the AirPods case? I like to use the AirPods for phone calls and usually the phone says they are connected when they are not. If I go play music and come back, then it seems to often help things out.

Your best option is to disable Bluetooth and then re-enable Bluetooth if they won't connect initially, which should fix the problem. I have had this happen to me as well, where the Airpods did not connect as they should the first time.

This is what I do with my jaybird buds. I assumed this was a quirk with not using apple’s product. It will often want to give priority to my watch over my phone.
