Airpods constantly cutting out with mac, help!?

I noticed the same issue last night when I connected mine to my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012). I was surprised that it cut out so frequently, while my phone almost never cuts out.
I also had some issues getting the Airpods to connect to my MBP. It would recognize them, but it took them forever to actually establish a connection. Had to restart the machine and try a couple times.

Have you tried this in a different location to rule out interference from something nearby?
My MacBook Pro (late 2013, 10.12.2) has had a rock solid connection with the AirPods and I've spent hours listening to the MacBook over the past couple days (BT is fun now). Connection only drops/sputters if I walk into another room, away from the MacBook.
