AirPods for Office Work

Question on the AirPods. I work in an office setting and depending on the type of day may listen to music when things get routine. Right now I’m using an LG headset that is a horseshoe around the back of my neck that allows the headphones to be cracked magnetically when not in use. If the phone rings I can silence the speaker and answer it easily without removing the headphones from my ear. When conversing with people I cradle the headphones.

The headphones are attached by wires to the horseshoe so I do feel I look a bit like Frankenstein walking around. I was considering a plunge to the AirPods (I know a new model is always around the corner, but feel they’ll be backordered for six months should they arrive.) but my concern was I wouldn’t have that option to easily cradle them in the workplace. Does anyone use them while conversing with people, can you hear easily, and are they sturdy enough to be tossed in a pocket if necessary? My current setup is bulky but at least I won’t lost anything.

Isn’t it awkward having them in if someone starts talking to you? Can you hear clearly with them in and is it safe to tuck them in a pocket?

If the volume (music/podcast) isn't blasting, you can hear your surroundings perfectly.

Sometimes I throw them in a shirt pocket, but most often I put them back in the charging case, which rides in my coat pocket all day, every day.

I've had them since they were available, and haven't lost anything yet. I work in an office every morning, drive about 100 miles per day, and work outdoors after the office daily. The airpods have been flawless in all those situations.

Right on. If I'm stopped by someone for a quick question, I usually just take one airpod out, as it pauses whatever is playing, then resumes playback when I put it back in my ear. Handy if I was enjoying the song, or if interested in a podcast.

I live pretty rural, and still feel a little odd wearing them around. They haven't been around long enough to look normal, where I live anyhow. But in all honestly, they changed my life in a positive way so I don't think about their appearance ..much. I don't have to stop working to take calls as in the past. And, being able to still hear my surroundings when outdoors allows me to be entertained while working. No other headphones have ever allowed me to do that safely. Pretty cool gear if function is more important than looks.

I use them from time to time, but I get asked by people can you hear me. I can hear people fine, but it seems to make people think you are being rude with them in your ears. So I stopped using them at work. I use to have an LG that went around the neck till one ear stopped working. I plan to get another.

Also you can program them to have a couple different actions based on a double tap - each one separate. I have right to play pause and left to Siri.

I've had a pair of Airpods for, coming up on 2 years, this January (was lucky enough to pre-order early) and for the most part, I use them everyday in my office. If someone is popping into my office for a quick conversation, I'll just tap one of them to pause the music, then again once the conversation is over. Answering a quick call from the office phone, I'll usually tap and leave them in, though after a few minutes, it gets uncomfortable, but having it in on the phone doesn't affect hearing the caller. Any sort of conference calls or involved meetings, they're out. After all of the use they've had, I would have expected some sort of negative effect on the batteries, but they're still going strong. I usually take them out of the case when I get in, put them in the case when I go to lunch, then right back out afterwards for the rest of the day. Not in ALL of the time, but I'm not encountering instances of dead Airpods. Hope this helps. I'm actually hoping that IF a new version comes out at the end of this month that there's some sort of upgrade to the Sound Quality. Not that there's anything wrong with the current ones, I'm just looking for a better reason over just wireless charging to pick up a new pair, haha. Hopefully in Black...

Being able to hear your surroundings helps coworkers get your attention. Then the very obvious and natural act of taking one out (which also stops the music) signals when you’re ready to talk. You could call it “social interaction engineering”! And with them being super easy to insert or remove, frequent interruptions are effortless.

Other 100% wireless buds i tried were hard to remove, didn’t stop the music, often got dropped and then were fiddly to get back in again with a tight seal for good bass. And then I had to mess around with the phone or something to restart the music. Interruptions were a pain, both for me and the other person.

You can also use AirPods as hearing aids with iOS 12. It's pretty cool.
