I took my AirPods out of my ears and left them out of the case. 20 mins later I put them in my ears and they didn't wake up or play even if I tapped them several times. I put 1 in the case for a second and back in my ears and they played fine. Is this normal?

Weird. I left mine out of the case for more than an hour without being in the charging case and put it in my ear and worked just fine.

Perhaps the Airpods sensors are recognizing they are secure or in your ears properly.

Mine have not replicated your reported concern.
