AirPods impossible to pair

Just bought a pair of AirPods and they pair with the iPhone 11 Pro fine

But when using my MacBook Pro 13" it doesn't work. Even turning the iPhone off and then open the AirPods case it then decides to pair with my watch

This isn't really what I thought would happen with these

Sometimes I can manually connect them using bluetooth menu and then it pairs back to my Apple watch ...ARGHHHH

Any tips on what needs to happen
