Just got my AirPods Max and I love them so far. But I have to say I’m super dissapointed with the general unboxing experience, and the accessories.

First the “case” - everyone has already covered this and it echo’s my sentiments. To be completely honest I’d rather they have not included anything at all. The material feels bad (I hate it on my iPad keyboard already), usage is clunky getting them in and out and it doesn’t solve the purpose of a case at all.

Second is the lightning cable. This is a $550 luxury item from Apple, and they can’t include a color matched lightning cable? I know there are blue/red/green...but at least on the black ones include a black cable. The $150 trackpad in space grey comes with a color matched cable. Given lightning is the only way to charge these things (APM would have been a perfect candidate for the magsafe puck) a fitting cable would have been nice.

Third is the $35 audio cable. I bought one just to have around, but it feels cheaper than the headphone wire in the old earpods which likely cost apple $1/pair. It’s also super short so it is basically only useful for plugging into a laptop.

It just annoys me that Apple can create excellent products, but then fail spectacularly on the accessories. I feel this has been the case for the past few years now - laptops no longer come with the power extension cord, iPhone’s don’t come with the charging brick, $130 magsafe duo doesn’t include a charging brick. The hardware they are putting out is incredible right now, but all Apple accessories just seem to be an afterthought. Even on the laptops - they removed all the ports and then offer only crappy first party dongles (Only HDMI and one USB-A), so you have to do your own endless search for a non-crappy third party dongle.

Anyone else disappointed with the “experience” of AirPods Max? I’ve bought a few other “high end” bluetooth headphones and they are packed with excellent accessories - plane adapters, fitted cases, splitters, audio cables, color matched usb cables. Even current generation Beats feel nicer taking them out of the box. It just makes me sad that Apple who used to be the king at this, releases a nice product at an extraordinary price, yet loses on the accessory side for no reason other than retaining pure profit margin. When buying the most expensive product in a category it should feel like you are opening the most expensive product in that category.

They gouge you on the price of the hardware, and then gouge you some more on the accessories. They do it because people continue to allow them to do it.

the 'unboxing' experience is nice but as a consumer I also prefer not to spend money on it (if they gave me an option that was $5 cheaper for plain packaging I would take it). they make the boxes so nice that I don't want to throw them out, but they end up just taking up space and I never use them again.

I’ve got like dozen chargers sitting around in a drawer. Only thing that miffs me about the exclusion of chargers is that they’ve just changed standard. If they gave us USBC bricks for a couple years then stopped it would have been fine. Almost feels a little calculated....

The 3.5mm cable situation is also pretty good damn sus. That 35 dollar one should have been included in the box. And they could have sold a nice braided one for more cash or something. I’m not buying that thing out of principle and waiting for 3rd party cables.
