Welp my OG AirPods Max finally died after 2 1/3 years just over a month ago so I figured I’d be better off getting a brand new pair rather than get them serviced and risk something else unrelated going wonky.

Ordered a new pair from a 3rd party retailer and all was good again until Sunday, charged them up as normal and left them off charge for a few hours while I was getting stuff done, come back to play some music and they’re dead, zero battery nada, zilch, checked that the outlet was turned on and checked the Apple 20w charger was working charged them up again and used them for about an hour.

Went to bed got up and they’re dead again!?! 🤨 so charged them up again and watched them when they weren’t in use, I could actually see the battery level go down by 1% per minute without use, tried multiple resets, tried resetting while on charge heard that’s a test Apple do and no difference the battery was just pouring out, never seen anything like it!

Given they were less than a month old decided to get the AppleCare + for them and booked myself a Genius Bar appointment thinking this is definitely a manufacturing fault with the battery or power regulation circuitry, took them in today and they verified the issue was indeed real.

So here’s me thinking great they’ve verified it and I’ve got AppleCare + should be able to get them replaced straight away! Nooooo.

Turns out the AppleCare+ express replacement service only applies to online claims not bringing them in store, all the staff were really helpful as always and I asked what’s the best option here send them off for up to 10 days or go online and get the express replacement, the team lead to be fair laid it all out, to get the express replacement they’d have to put a £450 hold on my credit card (more than the APMs cost in the first place) incase the faulty ones weren’t sent in, now I’m not paranoid but I didn’t fancy that being put on my card incase the couriers mucked up my return.

I guess the point I’m getting at is AppleCare+ is woefully deficient, pay £49 extra for piece of mind but then be told we’ll put a hold on your card for 9 times that amount all when under uk consumer rights Apple have to fix a manufacturing defect free of charge within 5-6 years of purchase (Scotland vs England consumer rights laws).

At the end of the day I’d have been better saving myself the £49 and just going down the service centre route that my statutory rights afforded me because the AppleCare + route provided no benifit in this situation.

TLDR; as long as your not driving a tank over your APMs or taking them for a swim in the pool AppleCare+ is all but useless!
