My usage would be maybe once/twice a week. How well do they maintain a charge just sitting
outside the case?

I Know that they must be in the case to enter power saver mode (or whatever it is called). So there must be more drain when just sitting. I'm needing to get a better idea of just what that might mean.

From 100% it takes about 6 months to get to 0.

I believe the case only expedites going into low power mode. It’ll go into LP mode regardless after a few minutes.

Thanks! That's what I was hoping to hear. Well, in truth I had held out hope to hear they got the H2 chip. But my old ears are far from golden!

Outside of the case? You'll lose power in a few days. If you keep them in a location where they aren’t near an Apple device where they could go into fast pairing mode or whatever, they might hold a charge longer, but outside of the case and within a few feet of your Apple devices, they’ll lose power unused in a few days.

Even in the case, you're still going to have a hard time reliably using these if you don’t touch them very often, unless you make a point to charge them. No matter what anyone tries to tell you, low-power mode is not a replacement for having an actual power button.

The good news is that they do charge pretty fast, to at least get you over that dead to juice hump.

But this is one of my biggest complaints against AirPods Max: not only is overall battery life pretty poor compared to the other headphones in its price range (Sony, Bose, Sonos), but they don’t hold a charge when not in use unless you always put them back into the stupid bra.

Bummer. Even if I liked that case, being pretty much a sedentary old man, other than when I'm sleeping they would be next to my iPhone and/or MacBook Air. I've had other brands of buds but in my experience none interacted with my Apple devices as well as Airpods. I've grown to be a lazy bastard and needing to re-establish a connection is a pain. I also appreciate other stuff such as easily seeing charge levels, naming, etc.

Thanks for the input!

I don’t like to use the case so what I’ve done for the past few years is just have a Lightning cable nearby where my AirPods usually are. I’ve got one plugged into a USB port on one of my power outlets and I just have it at the ready.

But given all the reasons you mentioned, you might find yourself using them more than once a week. I’m not saying plug them in every day or anything, but you can check the charge level easily and decide when you need to plug them in, even if they aren’t in use, just to keep them at the ready.

But sadly, they wont hold a charge for weeks at a time or anything.
