Hi all

I am still getting used to my AirPods Max which have now arrived

Can anyone link me to any info about the differences between transparency and noise cancellation?

I know it is a matter of pushing the button next to digital crown, but am still unclear on how to differentiate between the two modes. On the initial push of the button, which one turns off and which ones turns off?

Also, if anyone can explain the difference, that would also assist.

I am a relatively new headphone user and have been googling but can't seem to find an easy to understand guide.

Thanks.

By default, the side button switches between Noise Cancelling mode and Transparency mode. You can add the Off setting in Settings->Bluetooth->AirPods Max.

To put it simply:
  • Transparency: It lets in sound from your surroundings. You can hear your surrounding sounds clearly in this mode.
  • Noise Cancelling: Basically what it says, it cancels the sound of surrounding so you should hear less of any outside noise. It feels like as if all sounds around you are muted.
  • Off: neither Transparency or Noise Cancelling. It just isolates sound with the earcups.
Another way to tell which mode you’re on is in Control Centre. Tap and Hold the volume slider, and it would show you which mode you’re on and you can toggle through that as well.

Try clapping your hands or snapping your fingers during each mode to hear the difference.

It should be immediately apparent between transparency and noise cancellation. Go into the bathroom and run the water. Put on the Max. Pressing the button will result in one mode where you hear the sink, and another where the sound basically disappears (you may hear it faintly, but it'll be like 99% of that noise goes away).
