I am currently contemplating two scenarios. I have a dedicated basement room for working out and leisure activities.

I want to have a good home cinema-setup, but I see getting a huge TV and speakers with great picture and audio would cost about 5000$. (77 OLED+Full Sonos 5.1.2)

It would probably be awesome, but I also see that I could get the smaller 65 inch TV and instead use a pair of Airpods Max as my "surround"-setup. But are they good enough when doing the "spatial audio"-thing? The TV is said to have decent sound on it's own (of course no way near the sonos-setup). I have used Airpods Pro with my iPad and found the audio-experience to be pretty impressive when using spatial audio.

Suggestions. Downscaling would cost about 2000$ for same quality TV without the Sonos-setup.

I recently bought a pair of Airpod Max's for this use case - while they're great sounding, I don't think it replaces a true 5.1 surround sound system based on my experiences. If you need compact surround sound, it's quite good but I don't think I'd mistake it for a good real 5.1 setup.

I also have Airpod Pros - the Max's are more comfortable for me (head pinching beats having the AirPods jammed up your ears) but the sound quality is about 20% better, not 50% better. Better base and some added range.

Not a replacement for a 5.1. That’s way better. Its just $600. Buy both

:) It also is a balance of how much time one has to use the stuff with work, family, exercise and so on.

Airpods Max are pretty cheap today on a local deal, 43% off with 60 day return window.

Is that for new ones? Link!
When you have a return window, best would be to buy both options and decide for yourself. Although setting up the surround and returning it will be a hassle
