Has anyone been able to renew AppleCare on AirPods Max?

I just realized mine expired on February 1st so I was trying to renew it but when I put in the serial number I get the message "This device is not eligible for additional coverage.". I'm trying to figure out if it's worth calling Apple and trying to see if they will do anything or am I just out of luck

I was able to renew AppleCare on my Series 6 Apple Watch sight unseen after it expired months ago so this is worrying me that there's some issue with APM causing failure after a few years. So far no issues other than battery drain when not in use but that's been going on since day one.

You can only extend AppleCare+ on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch. Extend your AppleCare+ coverage - Apple Support

it is a bit worrisome knowing you will probably not get more than 3 years total use out of these. 2 if you have bad luck and they brick after AppleCare expires.
