Just checking if anyone else has had this issue. This is now the second time its happened where i pick them up, put them on and nothing. I check if connected to the phone and nothing, clicking on the button or wheel, no response. The only way to wake them up is to plug a lightning cable in, then it fires up. In both case i have over 50% battery.

They could be dead (I have noticed the reported battery percentage has been delayed too).

Try a hard reset, I bet it'll fix the problem. I had the same thing happen.

I experienced very similar last night. I had them in the Waterfields case, took them out, and when I did the green light came on the APM. I put them on my head and nothing, couldn’t get them to connect and my iPad and iPhone wasn’t seeing them. I put them back in the case, ensured they touched the magnets to trigger low power mode again, pulled them back out and they connected to both devices without issue and I was able to use them. Battery life was slightly under 50%, which is where I would have expected it to be given the last use of them.

It has occurred a second time after taking out of the Waterfields case. Had to put it back in the case and take it out a second time in order for it to fully wake up and connect to my devices again. Definitely strange as I never had any issues like that before getting this case.

I also have the Waterfields case and this has been happening to my AirPods Max for a few months too. They just don't turn on again unless plugged in. I even sent them to Apple and they returned them saying "issue could not be replicated". So maybe its the magnets in the waterfield case or something? Such an annoying problem to have on $1000 AUD headphones

edit: I contacted Apple and they said after 72 hours outside of the case, the Bluetooth is turned off. The support agent said to hold the Noise Cancellation button for 5-10 seconds and it should turn back on. I'll give this a go in 3 days I suppose. Maybe the Waterfield case isn't actually turning off the Max's properly? I always have the magnet between the headphones.
