I’m looking to buy a second hand pair of AirPods Max. Someone mentioned that these get tied to iCloud accounts the same way as iPhones do. Is this the case? Is there anything to check for when buying a second hand pair of Max? Anyone with any experience of this?

AFAIK AirPods isn't locked in to iCloud like iOS devices or a Mac. You - the seller - should be able to simply "Forget This Device" and that AirPods should be free to pair to any iPhone.

I've owned a couple of pairs of AirPods Max and I've never had to sign out of iCloud before selling them, and the buyers have had no issues with any sort of iCloud lock. The only thing you might need to do is change the name of the APMs when it connects to your device via Bluetooth as it might show the previous owner's name (e.g. "Jim's AirPods Max").
