It’s my birthday week so… after completing a project I was like let’s go do it.

Let me treat myself to the worlds most epic headphones you can get for $550… + apple care + headphone cable… which was sold separately!

So what was your first impression? They’re been out for a year or more, do you still use them? Anyone edit with them?

Thoughts…

Bought on launch day, fully expecting to return them after a few weeks (just wanted to try them, out of curiosity, and bought them on impulse). After all, I had a pair of Bose 700 which were ok (though I really didn’t use them much) which made the thought of forking over so much $ for the APM even more difficult.

First impression (just sitting in the parking lot of the mall) was not great, as I simply was t that impressed with how they sounded. Debated walking right back in and returning them, but decided to keep them at least for a week and give my ears time to acclimate. Glad I did, because I quickly became not only accustomed, but enamored to the sound quality, and my Bose 700’s went up on eBay shortly thereafter. I’ve used the APM just about every day since then (for a few hours a day). Getting so much use and enjoyment out of a product makes the cost much more tolerable.

I first bought the AirPods Max about a year ago. I was searching for a good wireless over ear headphone. I had tried the Bose NC700, Sennheiser Momentum 3, B&O HX, and B&O H95, but they were all a little finicky. So I decided to give the APM a shot. They sounded better than all of the others save for the Sennheiser and the H95. What separated the APM from all the others was the seamless connectivity with Apple devices, transparency mode, and their comfort. The only other pair that seriously gave them a run for their money was the H95. In fact, I would have chosen the H95 had they had a better transparency mode (they hissed with it on).

Going through all these headphones took me down an expensive path. I got a taste for good quality music and wanted more! To go along with the AirPods Max, I decided I wanted to find out what a high quality wired headphone could do. So I bought a Schiit Modi/Magni stack and a pair of HIFIMAN Sundara. I instantly fell in love and that led to exploring the HIFIMAN line further. I next got the Ananda and finally landed on the Arya. I also upgraded my amp/DAC. I now have a Schiit Asgard 3 paired with a Schiit Modius for one sitting area and an Asgard 3 with a DAC module for my desk setup. During this time I actually sold the AirPods Max (in January after about 9 months of use). They were pretty large which made them a bit of a pain to transport, and while the audio quality is fun, it is not as good as a decent wired headphone. So I decided to try some IEMs, the Moondrop Starfield. I like the sound of the Starfield (especially for the cost), but began to remember why I do not like IEMs. I cannot take them for more than about 30 minutes before discomfort sets in.

About 3 weeks ago, I went ahead and rebought the APM to replace the Starfields. I really love the comfort of the APM and their ability to seamlessly jump from one Apple device to another (including Apple TV) is such a great feature. The sound is good enough and transparency is remarkable. They have settled into being my at work headphone and the headphone I will grab at home when I do not want to distract others (the Arya are open back) or I need to cancel out the noise of the house.

So for me, they are an excellent headphone if you are entrenched in the Apple ecosystem (as I am), are not doing critical listening, and can make use of the transparency and noise canceling modes, but are not interested in an IEM like the AirPods Pro (I have those as well, but they are relegated to being used when I am moving around or need something small). I would not consider them a good headphone for editing if you need something that is accurate (though I am no editor so take that for what it's worth). They do well for a wireless headphone, but most wired headphones (even mid-tier models such as the Sennheiser HD6XX or HIFIMAN Sundara) will be considerably better from a purely audio quality standpoint.

As an aside, I would not bother with the wired connection unless you need it for something specific. It will not improve audio quality in any way.

TL;DR: APM's are a great headphone for the person who is all-in on Apple devices. They are not going to give you audio quality comparable to a wired headphone, but have good comfort, fantastic ANC and transparency mode, and sound that is better than most wireless headphones. Skip the buying the analog adapter for them.

Yes sir! Totally worth it…. Did get an amazon case with low power mode for it tho. I honestly can’t get the silicon case. Apple has done some interesting design decisions and I feel like this was an on purpose marketing gag. Release the AirPods Max with a case that will generate memes… BUT, they have to - at next release build a hard shell case. They just have to. Even if it is sold separately.

You know what, I bought a Waterfield case for mine and just found it way too bulky. After using the bra for several months, it is actually just fine in practice. I keep mine in my work bag and have not experienced any noticeable wear and tear on the headphones at all. So while it does look ridiculous, it is fine in daily use if you are at all careful about how you pack a bag.

The Max are great. I love how they seamlessly connect with all my Mac devices.

They’re great. Dont buy white if you hate discoloration is all ill say
I second this, the white ones discolor so easily. I wish I had black, but it was a gift.

I love my set. I have space grey, and while they aren't flashiest of the colors, they are super sleek. Compared to Bose or Sony or any of the $350 and under, they surpass in every way. Totally worth the money–because they perform all the functions of the Bose headphones, and at least a little bit of the use–case of a higher-end headphone, because of the sound quality.

BTW, there is a slight increase in sound quality (mostly a wider sound stage, less muddiness in the base) if I'm using the audio cable with my Mac using AM. YMMV. I've heard that that also makes them usable for editing, but that's not my use case so I'm not sure.

Also, I got my pair for $350 on eBay open-box. Risky? Yes. But they look and perform flawlessly, and at $350 are a great value proposition.

I was pretty interested in the AirPods Max since the release, mostly because of the spatial audio, because I like to watch movies with good sound in the evening, but I don't want to annoy my neighbours. What also catched my attention was the claim, that distortion is lower 1 % and I was looking for noise cancelling. But since I also really like to listen to music and I am pretty picky regarding the sound quality, I was sceptical.

After a few month, the review of the Airpods Max was up on my favorite audio site and caught my attention again. The distortion of this headphones is one of the lowest you can find in the market, even compared to most classic HiFi headphones that cost twice as much. The only problem found was the frequency response: There is a big dip between 1 and 7 kHz. But this can easily be equalized. After taking a listen at the Apple Store, I finally bought them ~half a year ago.

They are great for movies but without EQ only acceptable for music, in my opinion. With some simple EQ via headhone accomodation on iOS, they are pretty good. And with some proper fine tuned EQ, similar to the one shown in the review, they are one of the best headphones I have ever heard. And they completely eliminated my wish for any other over ear headphone.

So all in all good and pretty much perfect with EQ.

Yes. If you have a specific use case, go for it!

I didn't care for the price, but convinced myself based upon gaming, zero latency editing and also to have a way to plug into in flight entertainment systems if need be...If I traveled more, I'd probably get that AirFly bluetooth thing though.

I still think the cable should have been included given the $550 MSRP.

It's also a super thin cable -- makes me wonder about it's longevity honestly.

My one counter to this is for gaming usage.

I've found my APM to be a very handy gaming set using the wired connection right into the 3.5mm jack on my XBOX controller (on PC)
My PC is able to stream to them with very low latency. Lip sync is off but it’s not game shattering. It’s like a frame… but hearing atmos in Game play is epic!

I’m like waiting to June for the adapter

White looks so good but I was also worried about discolouration. So it was between pink and space grey for me. I have a space grey iPad Pro, iPad mini and MacBook. However my iPhone is gold and my Apple Watch is gold/pink gold. So I went with the pink.
