AirPods Max won't connect to MacBook Air automatically, but does with iPhone

I've been using my AirPods Max with my MacBook Air this week. My iPhone 13 is on my desk next to the MacBook.

When I put on the APM, they connect automatically to my iPhone and a message comes up on the MacBook screen 'AirPods Nearby' and gives me the option to manually connect to them.

Is there any way that I can get them to connect automatically to the MacBook rather than the iPhone? In settings on the MacBook, I have got Connect to this Mac 'Automatically' checked. I can change this to 'When last connected to this Mac', but I'd like it to connect automatically like it does with the iPhone.
