Airpods melted and inflated

Hi, have you seen anything like this?
First it couldn’t connect, next it started to heat up and finally melted.
The Apple said that because it is out of the one year warranty period and I haven’t kept the original receipt I could pay the out of warranty fee to replace it which is about 330 USD. Thanks...
Hope it is an isolated case.

Faulty charging case maybe? No way both would do that unless both affected by the same external stress. Like being boiled or microwaved. LOL

Like I said it has some connectivity problem, so I am pretty sure that the case was faulty. I was in an Apple store when this happened but think whatever you want.

I am not really sure about the type to be honest but I was afraid that it is leaking battery acid.

they don't have lead acid batteries in them

Airpods have 93mW hour batteries in them. That's 80 calories of energy. It'll raise one gram of water 80 degrees C. If it can't boil a gram of water, I don't think it'll melt an AirPod.

The case, maybe, but I still find it a stretch... 1.52Whr is 1300 calories. It would heat 13 grams of water 100 degrees— and it would include the mass of the case in that event.

Both AirPods failed simultaneously?

The plastic, no. But the batteries could definitely be destroyed by prolonged heat exposure. And given that they both look exactly the same, my guess would be battery swelling.

The battery is placed in the stem and from what I see on the upper Pod, it doesn't seem to be swollen.

The white surfaces looks rippled, as if it has been in an oven.

It's interesting that they are bulging in that same spot. Probably just the glue detaching from exposure to heat.
