For some weeks, my Airpods have been unreliable, disconnecting when the RH earpiece's charge had fallen below 50%. In an effort to put this right, I chose Forget This Device on my iPhone 11.I and on this MacBook Air then, with both earpieces back in their case, fully charged, and with the lid of the case open, tried to get the iPhone to recognise them. J pressed the starter-button at the back of the case until the green light turned to amber, but the amber light is steady, not flashing, and my iPhone and this MacBook Air still do not detect the Airpods. I have tried gently cleaning the AirPods and their case, but that has made no difference.

No need to reply, I have replaced them with new ones of a later -- though not the very latest -- generation. All is now well ! The old ones were in their prime good, but the new ones are superb,
