I recently bought the AirPods and love everything about them except that they are not automatically switching between my iPhone and iPad. The AirPods are paired to both. I had an old set of the original ones and they just switched depending which device I was using. Currently with the new ones, I have to click on the sound icon and switch from the device to the AirPods.

Is there something in the set up that I’m missing? I tried deleting them and re-pairing but still no auto switching between devices.

I’ve never gotten this feature to automatically work. I still have to manually select the AirPods on the new device that I want to connect to, and when I’m connected to the Mac, the AirPods have a harder time connecting to my iPhone unless I manually disconnect from my Mac. It’s a shame they don’t work as advertised. Bring on Bluetooth 5.0 where they can be connected to multiple devices at the same time.

go into bluetooth > airpods settings and see if theres an option to enable/disable "connect to the ipad/iphone automatically". if theres no option then you might need to update ios (ipad/phone) and/or firmware (airpods).

It had been working fairly reliably for me until recently. There could be a bit of lag, but it usually worked in a satisfactory way. In the last couple days it hasn’t been working without some jiggering. I suspect iCloud and or iOS to be the culprit, not the AirPods themselves. My 2 cents.

This NEVER works. I always have to manually switch my Airpods between my Mac and iPhone. Apple simply dropped the ball here.

This is so weird as the automatic switching worked perfectly with my original set.

Thanks to those that have responded. I’ll stop trying to figure it out now and just know that’ll I’ll have to connect them.

I just turned automatic switching off as it got too frustrating. If I was watching something on my Mac with my AirPods Pro, everytime I got a notification on my phone, the audio/video on my Mac would pause and the AirPods would switch to my phone.

This was working flawlessly for me but has now completely stopped in 14.4.

Anyone else having issues?

It’s has never really worked for me either between iPhone and iPad, does it occasionally and you think that’s pretty good, next time nothing all software up to date.

I had way better luck with my original AirPods which switched between devices flawlessly. My AirPods Pro switch between the iPhone and iPad only sometimes.

It was working pretty good for me on 14.3. It got screwed up in 14.4. I had good success with signing out and back in to iCloud on my iPad and iPhone. Works again, sometimes without the notification.
