AirPods notification on FULL VOLUME

Hi
When I'm using my AirPods and the volume is at 40%, notification sound is 100%. How to cancel this?

There's a two-year old discussion of this on MacRumors, because we're all experiencing the same thing! The only solution seems to be to turn to vibrate, which is not wholly satisfying.
