Airpods - Phone on Vibrate, no iMessage tone?

Was listening to music from my phone on my airpods this morning, and got a couple iMessages from my wife. My phone is on silent/vibrate. At no point did I get any kind of tone in my AirPods to tell me I had a message.

Is that because the phone was on silent/vibrate or just an iOS bug? I still would expect some tone in the Airpods even if my phone was on silent.
 
Would assume it works the same way as with regular headphones. Only calls will alert with headphones plugged in while phone is set to silent
