I've been using my Airpods Pro 2 for a few weeks and am very pleased with them.

However, I noticed optimized battery charging isn't doing much to keep them from being at 100% all the time. I rarely use my Airpods for more than an hour or so at a time, so the battery is almost always at 80-85% when I put them back in the case.

The case always charges them up to 100% right away.

I'd really rather the case let them float between 60 and 80% or so, so the batteries in the airpods last longer. Is this not what optimized battery charging is supposed to do, to keep them from constantly being fully charged when you don't use them a lot?

I think the idea is to keep them at 80% until its algorithm determines you’re about to use them, which is when it charges them to 100%.

My experience with this feature has been similar to yours. Unless you use the product in a consistent/patterned way that the algorithm can pick up on, and long enough that the battery drops below 80%, it seems like this feature is useless.

Ugh. That's what I was afraid of.

It'd be so much more effective if it could go "He never discharges them below 70-80%, so I'm just going to charge up to 85% unless this pattern changes."

Optimized battery charging is designed to help extend the overall battery life of your AirPods by reducing the time they spend at maximum charge. However, it's important to note that the feature learns your daily charging patterns over time and adjusts accordingly. If your usage pattern consists of short charging sessions followed by extended periods in the case, the feature may not activate frequently. You can try using your AirPods for longer durations before returning them to the case to allow optimized battery charging to take effect and help maintain their charge between 60% and 80%.

Just wanted to post about this because things have changed. The Airpods seem to have learned about my light usage patterns, and the fact that I rarely use them under 60% or so, despite my usage being at random times during the day.

It's now holding charging and keeping them from topping off until up to 24 hours or more into the future. For example right now they're at 93% and 82% and they are held until 15:00 tomorrow. (It's 18:15 now). That's 21 hours or so that they won't needlessly be at 100%.

So, it seems to work! I'm impressed, and hopefully the batteries will last much longer than my original AirPods did. I do have to remember to pause optimized battery charging if for example I'm going to be on a flight, though; gotta head into that with 100% for the longest runtime possible.

When I was using my App1 and App2, I start the day with App1 and when they battery level reaches around 0-5% at about 11.30-12.00, I switch to App2 and I use it until around 17-18.00hrs. When I put my APP2 in case, after a while it shows later that Airpods will not be charged fully until 11.30hrs!. It's like iPhone, it learns your pattern and charges fully when you need them first. I do wish If Apple give us an option to choose the charge level in software for all their devices.
