I received an email from Apple saying the hearing aid feature is active on iOS 18… Not iOS 18.1.

Is this true? Did they just flip the switch and activate it?

I don’t want to turn on beta updates a few days before the 18.1 release but if I can get the hearing aid feature now I will install 18.0.1.

They released 18.1 a few hours after I got the email. Even though the email said iOS 18 I’m guessing they meant 18.1 and just sent the email out early

I just installed iOS 18.1 and the hearing aid features are included in it. I was excited: I bought the AirPods for this reason, and immediately took the hearing aid test. I had already done something similar in the Mimi app, which the AirPods had used in the previous iOS versions to manage audio equalization, but I wanted to access the hearing aid features in this new firmware. Apparently, despite regularly asking people to repeat themselves and dealing with decades of tinnitus, the results were that I had only low hearing loss and the hearing aid feature was not necessary!

I just installed iOS 18.1 but hearing aid test not available for my AirPods Pro 2 with the latest firmware. The Hearing protection feature is included. I suppose that Health Canada has not approved the hearing test yet.

Where are you based please? I'm just checking that the hearing aid options are definitely available in the UK with 18.1. UPDATE. They are not.

I just checked where hearing aid features are available : Features require AirPods Pro 2 with firmware version 7B19 or later. All features may not be available for all countries or regions, for more information visit: https://apple.com/airpods-pro/feature-availability/
Yup it has to be approved by your government. In the USA it was signed into law by the president. It took federal legislation to make it happen. I suspect it’s going to be the same for your country

Sadly you are right. The Hearing Aid industry in the UK is a closed shop. The problem I have is I will have to stick to IOS 17.7.1 so no chance of playing with AI or exploring the new hearing aids changes.

Go to an Audiologist and have a professional hearing test and ask for a copy then apply it to the Airpods. You can take a photo of it.

I am in the UK and overnight my Airpods updated to the latest firmware. Sadly the UK is not on that list. Why update the firmware if 18.1 if the Airpods can’t work with the new hearing test etc?

Your phone and AirPods will be ready whenever your government approves the feature.

I already have my latest hearing test data applied to my AirPods. So not a big issue for me at the moment. Just waiting how it'll take to be approved in my country. Takes time to get over delays pulled by powerful hearing aids companies

I just did the test and it says I have 10 to 15 DBHL hearing loss which apparently is little or none. I still have a hard time understanding what people are saying if there is any kind of background noise. I can hear things, but cannot separate the sounds. I was hoping this would help with that, but apparently it says my ears are fine.

You could experiment with the 'conversation awareness' feature to see if that makes a difference, and of course, nothing prevents you from turning on the hearing aid feature and see if changing the ambient noise setting helps.

I had an old Mimi test that I must have really had trouble with, because it listed me as having mild hearing loss and it allowed the Hearing Aid feature to be activated. If you can find a way to "fake" a bad hearing test, you'll unlock the Hearing Aid functionality, upon which you can revert to the other better hearing test (or take a new one) that is accurate.

Yea, the information in the provided article says under 25dBHL is little to no loss. The chart in under the Understanding Hearing Loss article in the Health app. I had to use the search feature to find the Hearing Test Result section.

Yep, I've been using an audiogram from my audiologist for Headphone Accommodations and it really improved tone and clarity. I now use it with the hearing aid functionality.

Samsung have the feature on the latest phones and buds so I would hope it is a formality!

I think conversation awareness only lowers the volume or pauses audio playing. Am I wrong about that? Maybe just having them on with Transparency will filter out some background noise?

I thought about that or maybe after the test starts move to a noisy environment.

It’s frustrating because I have to ask people to repeat themselves all the time. It’s like my ears can’t filter out the background noise.

From Apple.

"When you start talking while you're wearing your AirPods, Conversation Awareness seamlessly lowers your media volume and enhances voices in front of you. When your conversation ends, Conversation Awareness automatically turns up the volume and brings you back to your original noise-control setting."

It works really well for me but it does take a bit of getting used to because you have to start talking for the background sound to drop. Or somebody starts talking to you and the Airpod microphones pick it up.

As soon as somebody starts talking to you, even if you are playing music, the background volume of the music fades down while you carry on the conversation. When you finish, the volume fades back up. I have Conversation boost switched on too which is very good for noisy environments.

Apple:

"When your AirPods Pro are connected to your device, you can use Conversation Boost to focus on the person talking in front of you. This makes it easier to hear in a face-to-face conversation. Wear your AirPods, and make sure they're connected to your device."

If you already have an audiogram, just load that. You don't necessarily need a to use Mimi or the Apple hearing test.

I personally have been using Adaptive mode as it dynamically raises and lowers the Airpods volume going into your ears AND raises or lowers the background noise.

To do the same manually switch Transparency on and set the volume for amplification of sounds and in the other slider the amount of Background noise cancellation. They both default to 50% and they both work for me set at the defaults.

I hopes some of this helps.
