I used AirPods Pro for many years and Apple Music never showed this before. With AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C, it shows “Hi-res Lossless”. Does it mean anything?

They do apparently have the hardware built in, although I’m not sure what BT codecs would stream in 24/96

Maybe they use 5Ghz just like they are supposed to do with Vision Pro and iPhones already had this capability?

PS: I am 99% sure this started with the recent iOS 17.1.1 update.

I got my hands on the original AirPods Pro and the 3 Gen AirPods and they definitely don’t show high-res lossless when playing music.

Looks like the advertised 5Ghz connectivity that was touted to be exclusive to Vision Pro also works with iPhones.

It does not... The lossless message is regarding the quality of streaming from Apple Music servers to the phone, not the quality to the output device.
The message will show (when available) depending on your streaming settings regardless of what you are listening with.
It's always been this way.

You may be correct, but the part that confuses me is that if I play the same song to HomePods, it shows “Lossless” instead of “Hi-Res Lossless”. When I play the same song to 3rd Gen AirPods, it shows none of these things.

Okay, I figured it out
1. If you have a song already downloaded offline as Hi-Ress Lossless, it will always show that when you play that song
2. If you don’t have the song downloaded offline but are streaming over the internet, Apple Music intelligently selects the highest quality your AirPods can support.
3. If you stream a song to the HomePods, the song is not going from your phone, but being streamed directly by the HomePods, so it is limited to Lossless only
