Hi,

I'm trying to get AirPods Pro for my 96-year-old father-in-law before he gets a proper hearing aid device. My question is, if I set them up in advance with transparency mode, can he use them without needing an iPhone? He's not very familiar with and too old to use an iPhone by himself. Thanks for any feedback.

I think he can use it without an iPhone. Also Conversation Boost feature is for your situation. Check it out. An AirPods Pro 1 will be enough for your father-in-law.

Thanks. ChatGPT also confirms it, but I was wondering if anyone had the experience of using it without the need for a nearby iPhone.

Yes, you should be able to use it without the phone, though you may want it to setup the AirPods, and also to change settings on the fly. They do a great job as hearing aids, and almost a year ago, I compared them to a set of OTC hearing aids- the AirPods pro were better in almost every way.

Thanks, My father-in-law is here and I'll make a test with my AirPods. I hope it works well for him. Standard hearing aids are at least $1.5k and it's a pretty elaborate process to get them. I appreciate the feedback.

I wear hearing aids and also use AirPods in certain scenarios. They should work but not having the phone nearby eliminates being able to adjust them in any way.
