I work on an iMac all day. I also have an iPhone 11, and every single ***** time I try to switch audio output between my phone and my iMac is an act of congress.

Any suggestions? I can't tell you how many times I experience a "Connection Unsuccessful" error on my iPhone, or I just don't get a connection on my iMac.

Everything (phone, computer, airpods) have the latest firmware. Why is this so painfully cumbersome? I've reset the AirPods multiple times.

Perhaps your AirPods Pro are defective. Or it could be a software issue...

My AirPods Pro (firmware 2B584) have no difficulty in connecting with multiple devices:

  • iPhone XS running iOS 12.4.1
  • iPad mini 4th generation running iOS 12.4.1
  • Mac mini 2018 running macOS Mojave 10.14.6
  • MacBook Air 2019 running macOS Mojave 10.14.6

and switching between them.

This shouldn’t happen. My gen 1 work pretty smoothly- when I go to a different device I just hit the AirPlay button and select the AirPods there. Have you tried to remove the Bluetooth entries on your devices and pair them AirPods again?

Toothfairy is a great app for mac that puts your AirPods/bluetooth headset one click away on the menu bar.

I wish they would build in functionality that recognizes across all your devices if the AirPods are in, and if you tell a device to play it automatically switches to it.

Why fight it?

Consider Airpods for each device.

I now have (2) gen 1 and a gen 2 Airpods connected to 3 separate MACs. The Airpods vary in reliability when connecting to the MAC for conference calls. It’s frustrating when time is critical.

Now I can just use whichever Airpods connect immediately and I find that I can switch to another set when the battery runs low or getting disconnected for some unknown reason.

Toothfairy is a great app for mac that puts your AirPods/bluetooth headset one click away on the menu bar.

I also use Toothfairy for easy and fast switching between Airpods. The battery indicators help to gauge when to switch from one side of the AirPod to the other. This extends the usage time when on conference calls.

Another battery saving thought is to use an external microphone so that it conserves the AirPod battery much better.

Instead of throwing away old Airpods, this has brought a better ongoing use for Airpods and multiple devices.

On the iPhone and Apple TV, the Beats Studio is a much greater experience for music and sounds. The Beats also work very well on the MAC for prompt recognition and quality sound. They are just oversized when sharing the video screen. The Airpods tuck away nicely and are inconspicuous on video conference calls or recordings.

Its taken me agonizing trials to get to this.
