Ok, this is just to ventilate my frustrations and to see if there’s any help to get..
Yesterday I caved in and bought myself a new pair of AirPods Pro, as I had some issues with my last pair.
Came home and saw that it was still on the old 2D27 firmware. So, I did what I always do. Connect it to the phone, plug it in the charger, and waited for about an hour.
Guess what? Still no update. So, I decided to leave the case lid open while still in the charger. Left it alone for another hour. Still no update. I then re-paired my AirPods with my phone, listened to music for a few minutes and then put my AirPods back in the case. Waited half an hour, still no update. Had to use my phone, so I had to leave the process for a little while (AirPods still in the charger, just in case..). And so this process was repeated over and over again until I had to go to bed last night.
Put the AirPods and the iPhone on the charger and sat them close to each other. Woke up this morning, and lo and behold, still not updated!!
This is just so frustrating!! I miss the spatial audio and improved sound from my old pair. I have now reset my AirPods again and connected it to my iPad Pro, as I need my phone during daytime.
But, so far, I have spent 18 hours on trying to update those AirPods!! I just can’t understand why Apple can’t add an “update AirPods” option, just like they do for the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, MacBooks and every other device, so that you can buy a new product, bring it home, update it, and start using it with its most recent firmware right away.
Anyway.. any tips to help me get these things updated?
The instructions are simple.. but yet, nothing happens.. but my question is this: it says that the AirPods has to be connected to the Apple device it’s paired to. Does that mean that the lid of the case has to be open during the update process? Because as soon as you close the lid, the AirPods changes to “not connected” in the Bluetooth menu.. or should the lid be closed? I’m really at a loss here.. and quite frustrated.. Sorry for taking up your time.. any input is most appreciated

I hear your frustration, I had the same with my APM’s.

Try disconnecting from WiFi and let the AirPods update via cellular. It worked for my APM’s.

My tip is for you to keep this thread going for a couple of days, with people giving you a long list of different magical rituals that they swear by will solve your problem.

Nothing of that will of course be of any use, but you will have something to do, as well as be given the feeling of not just waiting, while the whole thing sorts itself out.

THANK YOU!!! That did the trick!! After 19 hours of frustration, I tried your method - switching off my wi-fi, and they updated in 10 minutes ???

Man, you should have stuck with 2D27, 3A283 is trash.
Thanks for your input, but what makes you think 3A283 is trash? Anyway, I wish Apple would soon release a new firmware update, as I don’t think the APPs have been updated since September. I believe they could improve the noise cancellation and the microphone/call quality in noisy/windy enviroments.

I apologize for not have explained my point in detail.

Background: Have replaced my pair of AirPods Pros twice at Apple Store.

Issue: The replaced new AirPods Pros always came with the 2D27 firmware, you immediately feel that the surrounding sound is suppressed. But you just can't prevent it from upgrading to 3A283, which by comparison will actually not suppress background noises such as bird chimes, car noises and the sounds of people talking, in certain cases you could have a sense of "this is not trying to cancel noise at all", it seems that when the surrounding noise is too high the active noise canceling somewhat fails (the mics that are supposed to capture noise waves and help generate counter wave would fail, at least that's what appeared to me.)

My guess: To add the new positioning audio feature, which may require the mics to capture the surrounding sound and calculate your head's relative position, either the calculation power is dragged or there's a bug in the firmware that reduced the effect of noise cancelation (again, yes).

The New 3A283 firmware is breaking Airpods, in my case my Airpods 2nd gen, microphones stopped working, you can use them to listen music, but if you want to use them for phone calls etc, you won't be able to.

I'm not the only one who got this problem, the best part is that it's not iOS 14 problem its the airpods firmware, because I've used airpods with old software and ios (beta versions) and everything was working, the moment new firmware was relisted, I've done the update boom, microphones stopped working.

Hi everyone, I just got my new Airpods Pro. I think I have issue with the case’s battery. It losts 9 percent overnight with zero uses (the airpods themselves was 100% before night). It drains much faster than my airpods 2 case. Anyone have this issue?

I bought ones yesterday and got the same issue. I read that it must discharge completely (AirPods and case) and then charge again full, waiting half an hour after 100% and supposedly solves it. I haven’t done it but will try soon. If someone else have any suggestions we’ll appreciate it.

And if you were on the Apple forums their community 'experts' would be telling you that '...it worked for me so the problem is obviously you...'
