So my trusty gen 1 AirPods look like they have finally bitten the bullet. The left AirPod disconnects every two minutes. Looking at the Pro’s and the max and wondering what to buy.

These would be used for in the home, gym, walks and occasional commuting (COVID allowing). Curious to what you all chose/would choose and why? Also are the AirPods Pro reliable, worth buying now or holding out? The multiple threads about them disconnecting doesn’t sound good and what has happened to my gen 1’s, I have had them 4 years tho so can’t complain.

Sorry to slightly hijack Dave but I'm also in a somewhat similar position as you (minus the failing OG AirPods). I'm considering buying the AirPods Pro but not sure if I should wait for the next-gen which is rumoured to be some time this year.

I doubt they'll announce them at WWDC so it'll be around September/October - part of me thinks that's far too long to wait... Would be good to see what people think!

Also in terms of new features I'm not sure what would give me new tech jealousy - if they implement the AirTag tech into the case that could do it!

I and my husband have both the AirPods Pro and max. For home use there is no competition, the maxes are the ones we wear. He works from home and since getting the max, prefers them for conference calls. When we walk outside he started with the pros and has since switched to the max. I use the max. For commuting and traveling, again no competition, the max are our go tos. At the gym he prefers the AirPods and I prefer the max. Mostly because we do very different activities.

Walking and gym automatically disqualify the Max in my opinion. They are fantastic at home and when you are mostly stationary, but far too heavy for activity. I would suggest the AirPods Pro instead.

As for waiting. We are a good 6 months out from a September/October event when new Pros may be announced. That is far enough away that I would be comfortable getting them now, especially if there were a sale.

As an OG (Dec 2016 buyer) owner to this moment -- and on life support

I personally can't recommend the Pro's if you like the specifics of the AP 1&2 (open design).

The plug/ear tip design of the Pro makes it a very different product in terms of popping in/out and having it disappear when in your ears, etc, that is so loved about the AP1/2 form factor.

I thought the Pro's sounded very nice, but it introduced just enough hassle and change from the AP1/2 form factor that it simply wasn't for me.

The max is an entirely different ball of wax. You have to want a large heavy over ear design (which has benefits) and I personally don't find anything about them that should make an AP1 user consider them for a replacement. It's a wildly different usage experience.

Honestly if money were no object, one could easily support the idea of having all THREE products (AP2, APP and APM), as they each specialize a bit differently.

If I had to replace my AP1's this very moment (like tonight)...it would be AP2's, no question.

I'm trying my best to hold out for the rumored AP3's

There are so many issues with the Pros that I would probably buy a cheap bud to hold you over until the APP 2 is released, hopefully with better battery, durability, and QC.
