Can you use just one at a time if you are using it for a phone call?

no problem. I just had to have the case replace on one pair of mine. but both of mine I need to watch to make sure they are charging when I put them in or one may not charge. the new case I don't maybe some gunk in there.

Make sure that you re-pair the AirPods to your phone after you got the new case. I had s similar issue with one not charging after a case replacement and took it back up to apple. The tech told me to re-pair it to the phone. Since I did that, they've charged much more regularly ( though not 100% of the time)

they told me to leave the case closed with the AirPods in and charging for 15 minutes. that seemed to have worked.
