Airpods return? will apple catch me?

ok abit of click bait really

however i lost my charging case and i have been using my sisters charging case they work well and get linked to my phone

but then i thought does this mean someone can steal my airpods and if lets say they have a charging case it will work with it? if that is the case is that not bad?

also does this mean someone can use airpods buy new ones swap them and give it back? and apple will not know?

Each case has its own serial number which should match the apple receipt. But yes you can swap the airpods and return with the case that matches your original purchase. Or maybe not.
