AirPods switch/swap audio to my iPhone when I answer a phone call

I’ve long had an issue where if my AirPods 2 are in and I answer a call, they’ll momentarily be the audio device for the call and then my iPhone will just switch to the phone and off the AirPods. After I switch back I’m usually good but sometimes mid-call they’ll switch to the phone the same way. My AirPods are still connected, I just have to choose them again in the phone call app. Any ideas what’s going on?
