AirPods won't connect

I've been using them for weeks. This morning they wouldn't connect to my iPad so I "forgot" them via the Bluetooth menu and now when I try to connect I'm hit with this "hold button" screen, and it just hangs there. Tried turning Bluetooth/phone off and on. Nothing working.
