hi,

i'm trying to set up the airport extreme as a remote station, as the signal from the net connection i'm sharing with a neighbor isn't strong enough where my system is. i go through all the wds stuff, find the network, choose remote station, and all goes well, until i try to update. then it tells me that the ip address is invalid. what ip address does it want if it is acting as a remote station?

under internet settings, if i choose dhcp instead of confirgure manually, then it gives me a warning that remote stations should not use dhcp. if i continue anyway, it updates the airport, but i don't get an internet connection. i connect to my airport, but no connnection out. i assume that i connect to my station, not the network i'm trying to relay, and then my station should act as a relay for that?

thanks,

mickm

What you're trying to do is set it up as a relay, right? Where the Airport Base Station relays the signal from the Lynksys to your computer? If so then that's not possible. That function was never a standard set in 802.11 and so each manufacturer has developed their own system of doing it. So for you to be able to do that you'll have to get a Linksys device to use instead of the Airport.

wrc fan has a point however, I have heard of a hack that you must install on your Linksys router to let the AirPort extend it's range. As is, you should be able to put it on the network, albeit it will not extend the range (useless). :(

ok, thanks guys. i know that linksys makes a signal booster, or something similar, so it looks like that is in the cards.

thanks!
