AirPort Express Updates?

I'm thinking about purchasing an AirPort Express to create a stronger wireless signal in my house. I have a new one-story with the cable modem and Linksys WRT-54G router located in the basement. While building, I ran conduit to each room containing a coax cable and CAT-5 cable so I'd have a port I could plug in to. The problem is that when I'm in a room directly over the router, I get 4 bars of signal; but if I go to the other end of the house, I only get 1 bar of signal. I know you can't extend the network, but I figured I'd just create a sub network and plug the AEx into the ethernet port in either my office or great room, which would be connected to the router via CAT-5 cable.

Now, the AEx was released over 2-years ago on June 7, 2004 at WWDC. Does anyone think we could possible see a new AEx with the capability to stream video at this years WWDC?

Well, if you ask my opinion i would say you shouldn't expect a new AE Xpress. I have two reasonings behind this. One, there have been no rumors recently about anything airport related. Two, Wireless-G is still a very much blooming technology, and Wireless-N is comming up fast, but not fast enough. I think the AE Xpress will be be upgraded to Wireless-N with a video capability, only after AE Xtreme is updated. So is short its not being updated this WWDC, Just my Opinion

I would agree. APE hasn't been updated in ages. There is no reason to update it untill it can do video. That day will come when N becomes common.

Its going to happen. Just dont know when. 11n standard got disputed so maybe not until next year OR Apple will design it with 11n but allow the firmware to be upgradable to allow it to match the standard. That would be very cool.

i also hope they release a wireless camera for the new rumoured home security software...

Apple has always been at the forefront of Wireless technology. They brought out the Airport Base Station when everyone thought wireless technology would fail. They were one of the first to bring out a 802.11g product - the Airport Extreme. Based on this, I'd say the standard n is ready for Apple to bring out a new product. Whether this is an express station rather than the standard base station - i don't know and whether this is in WWDC next month, or in randomly in November, I don't know.

What I do know is Apple has shown time and time again they like to pioneer wireless technology and to pioneer, they'll need to bring an N device out soon.

Airport Express will definitely be updated, but I don't know what Apple's timeframe is.

Also: Airport Extreme base station disappearing from Apple Stores?

It's interesting to see all this speculation about wireless updates from Apple. Just a few weeks ago I noticed that the Airport Extreme base station is no longer shown in the UK or other european Apple Store sites. In the US the PoE version seems to be gone (but the other one remains). Japan still has both, at least as far as I could tell!

It might make sense (profit) for Apple to put some sort of N or MIMO technology out at the Extreme base station price point before updating the Express. Or is it simply that the sales of the more expensive wireless APs were so low that the product has disappeared.
