I have an Airport Express 802.11n 2nd generation that is currently running 7.6.9. It will not update to 7.8. I have attempted to update it through both iOS and MacOS but with no luck. I have also done a factory reset and set it up as new, but it still isn't seeing the update.

Any ideas?

Only the Apple TV shaped ones can be upgraded to 7.8. The older plugin wall style ones cannot be.

As I stated in the OP, mine is the 2nd Gen 802.11n which is the newest, Apple TV shaped one.

I mistook that for being the second generation Express, which is the plugin shaped one.

Oh gotcha.

I did finally get it to update. After several attempts of factory resetting and rebooting the device I finally decided to plug it in via a CAT6 cable and have it broadcast its own SSID instead of having it join my existing network like I had it set up to do before. It immediately saw the update, and I was able to install it. I then did another factory reset, joined it to the existing network, and voila! It's working great as an Airplay 2 receiver.
